What are ERDF funds and who manages them in Spain?

The main objective of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is to help reduce the disparities between the levels of development of European regions and the backwardness of the less favoured regions of the European Union.

The Commission has proposed an annual EU budget of €189.3 billion for 2024 and can be requested until June.

ERDF funds pursue 5 objectives:

  • A smarter Europe: innovative and smart economic transformation.
  • A greener, low-carbon Europe.
  • A more connected Europe: mobility and regional connectivity in the field of ICT.
  • A more social Europe: implementing the European Pillar of Social Rights.
  • A Europe closer to its citizens: sustainable and integrated development of urban, rural and coastal areas through local initiatives.

In Spain, the Directorate-General for Innovation Planning (DGPI) manages operations co-financed with ERDF through the Sub-Directorate-General for Large Scientific-Technical Facilities (SGGICT) and the Sub-Directorate-General for the Internationalisation of Science and Innovation (SGINCI).
