The holiday season, known for its bright lights and festive activities, is often associated with increased energy consumption. However, recent studies disprove this perception in the industrial and commercial sectors, noting that Christmas does not necessarily imply an increase in electricity consumption in these sectors. Nonetheless, the holiday downtime can create unique challenges as operations resume in the new year.

Does electricity consumption really increase at Christmas?

According to recent reports from Neoelectra and other reliable sources, the Christmas season does not generate a significant increase in electricity consumption in commerce and industry. This is largely due to the shutdowns that occur during the holidays, especially in the industrial sector, where many plants operate at lower capacity or even completely cease their activities.

In the case of commerce, although energy consumption in establishments such as shopping centers and stores may increase due to decorations and extended opening hours, these increases are often offset by reduced activity in other areas, such as offices and factories.

    Christmas Energy Consumption

Energy challenges when getting back to work after the holidays

However, Christmas breaks can bring “coal” as a New Year’s gift for many companies. The return to industrial or commercial activity after days or weeks of inactivity can lead to consumption peaks, electrical problems or even system failures. These unexpected events not only affect operational efficiency, but can also represent significant additional costs.

But, how to avoid these problems?

IEQSY offers practical solutions to mitigate these problems:

    • Preventive maintenance: Ensure that all equipment and energy systems are in optimal condition before and after shutdowns, with the support of tools such as IEQSY-VIEW, which allows monitoring and managing energy consumption patterns in a uniform manner.
    • Peak demand management: Implement technologies to control and stagger the restart of machinery to avoid overloads.
    • Schedule optimization: If possible, plan the progressive return of operations to distribute energy consumption evenly.

Energy efficiency strategies for Christmas and New Year’s Eve

Although overall consumption is not increasing, the holiday season is an excellent opportunity for businesses to optimize their energy efficiency. Some key strategies include:

    1. Energy audits: Identify areas where consumption can be reduced without affecting operations. With systems such as IEQSY-PQS, you can audit and optimize electrical systems, improving overall efficiency.
    2. System automation: Implement sensors and automatic controls to manage lights, heating and machinery efficiently.
    3. Renewable energy: Consider using clean energy sources to offset the additional consumption of holiday decorations, supported by tools such as IEQSY-SEW.
    4. Staff awareness: Engage employees in energy-saving practices during and after the holidays.

    [et_pb_row admin_label=»row»]
[et_pb_column type=»4_4″][et_pb_text admin_label=»Text»]Artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a crucial ally in the quest for energy efficiency in buildings, infrastructure and industry. Its ability to optimize demand and provide energy flexibility allows business decision-makers to focus on higher-impact actions.

    AI-driven energy transformation

AI has revolutionized various sectors in the last decade, and its application in energy efficiency holds promise in the face of climate change. Environmental policies seek to mitigate the effects of global warming and promote sustainable use of energy resources. At IEQSY, we strongly believe that AI can play a decisive role in this mission, optimizing consumption and reducing the carbon footprint; that is why we use AI in our energy efficiency systems IEQSY-PQS, IEQSY-SEW and IEQSY-VIEW.

Opportunities for AI in energy efficiency

In the energy sector, AI can maximize efficiency in end consumers, i.e. buildings, infrastructure and industries. Some of the most notable applications include:

Automatic detection of anomalies in energy consumption:

    • Alerting service: AI analyzes the specific behavior of a building or infrastructure, alerting on significant deviations from expected consumption.
    • Benchmarking service: By comparing the consumption of an asset with data from other similar assets, AI identifies areas with greater potential for improvement.

At IEQSY, we help you analyze the performance of your building and/or infrastructure with our IEQSY-VIEW energy efficiency system, an application that identifies in real time the possible incidents and electrical risks in your facilities and provides technical details and specific advice to address the problems identified. And best of all… it allows you to monitor it easily from your cell phone!

Demand optimization of air conditioning and refrigeration systems::

    • Predictive and optimization models: AI integrates data from meteorology, occupancy, air quality, and other factors to adjust energy demand and maintain optimal conditions.
    • Benefits: Reduced consumption and operating costs, and improved indoor environmental conditions.

In IEQSY we work with clients in sectors such as Data Centers, Retail and Supermarkets, areas where it is vital to have a good air conditioning system so that information storage equipment does not overheat; or where it is vital that refrigeration equipment does not suffer electrical damage that causes stoppages in the food cold chain. That is why customers in these sectors rely on our AI-supported systems to prevent these types of incidents that can cause major losses.

AI in industry and smart buildings

AI and Big Data enable industry to use smart sensors to improve efficiency throughout the production chain. Smart buildings, equipped with advanced technology, manage energy resources efficiently, reducing environmental impact and improving the quality of life in cities.

    Smart Grids

Smart Grids are intelligent networks that balance energy supply and demand in real time, detect errors and optimize voltage. Thanks to AI, energy suppliers can manage service outages and demand peaks efficiently.

One of the main objectives of the energy efficiency systems we have developed at IEQSY is precisely to reduce these voltage drops and micro outages that cause so much damage to equipment and, ultimately, increase costs.

    Smart Grids

Perception and adoption of AI in companies

Although only 9% of companies currently use AI for energy management, satisfaction with these technologies is high. Most managers believe that AI will be crucial to reduce costs and carbon footprint in the future. The energy transition is a priority both for its economic impact and the need for decarbonization.

From IEQSY we encourage all companies to join the wave of energy efficiency supported by AI! And you, are you joining us?

IPMVP is a protocol developed by the EVO (Efficiency Valuation Organization) that is highly valued, as it allows a rigorous comparison of the energy consumption of a piece of equipment, of a part of an installation; or even an entire building before and after implementing energy efficiency improvement measures (EMMs).

How does it work and what are the advantages of implementing it?

Depending on the client’s needs and budget, the IPMVP protocol proposes 4 measurement and verification options to be applied in energy improvements:

    • Option A: The energy efficiency measure is verified in isolation, with only one key parameter in the installation.
    • Option B: It is verified in isolation, but measuring all parameters.
    • Option C: The complete installation is verified.
    • Option D: A simulation of the energy consumption of the entire installation or part of it is carried out.

Among its most outstanding advantages are the reduction of the costs of the energy performance contract, the realistic achievement of the objectives compared to the results or the ease of being able to receive energy efficiency aid; among others.

Wouldn’t it be interesting to be able to verify the savings after investing in energy?
